Q. Does my mechanic have a lien on my car?

A. Basically, yes. If a mechanic repairs a car and is not paid, the mechanic has a lien on the car and may keep it until payment. If payment is not made, the mechanic has the right to sell the car.

I should also point out that a mechanic generally loses the lien if he lets you have the car. The major exception is if you pay with a check that bounces. In that case, the mechanic may repossess the car.
